Life Lessons:
Now you might be wondering if I have lost my mind a bit writing a blog post about a bowl and a yellow one at that, but trust me, this blog post about a bowl is worth it.
Growing up I would stay at my grandma’s house on Monday, Tuesday and part of Wednesday. My mom owned a small hair salon and worked those three days, so rather than dragging me home every night, I would stay the night at my grandmas. It was pretty cool because what happens at grandmas stays at grandmas. Am I right?!?!?
Don’t worry, the little yellow bowl will be in the story soon. As I got a little older, I started waking up with the grandma around 4:00AM when my grand-pap would get up to go to work. Each morning grandma would get up, make grand-pap breakfast and get a lunch packet for him then send him out the door with a kiss. Why you ask? Because he loved him and wanted to serve him.
Once I was older and started waking up with grandma, I too would want breakfast. So I would eat a bowl of Honey Nut Cheerios in the chair to the right of my grand-pap each morning I was able to drag myself out of bed. I watched grandma butter grand-pap’s bread, gather his vitamins, help him with his coat; the list went on but each morning she would do this.
There was no rule that said she had to. Nothing that made her do all of this. She just wanted to serve grand-pap and help get his day off to a good start. So why does this little yellow bowl matter so much? It’s a reminder to serve. Not just my hubby but others as well.
A few months ago I was at my grandma’s house and I asked her if she still had the little yellow bowls from all those years ago. Puzzled, she said she did and I proceeded to tell her that I had gotten some Honey Nut Cheerios of my own and they just didn’t taste right without the yellow bowl so please don’t get rid of them without letting me have one. Still a bit bewildered she proceeded to give me one of the little yellow bowls and then told me how she had acquired them… She said that years ago when you purchased a certain item, they would include a bowl, cup or plate inside as a treat. Well, her yellow plates and bowls were conveniently collected from non other than a dog food bag. (Now a days you can’t even get a piece of paper in a Crackerjack box let alone a dish.)
Anyhow, this little yellow bowl is a reminder to me that not only does Honey Nut Cheerios and 2% milk taste the best out of a dog food bag’s free little yellow bowl but that life is about serving and being selfless. Placing others needs before your own, life lessons.
