Picking and hiring your wedding photographer can be overwhelming. There are so many things to consider. Do their packages have all the digital photos? Can all my guests see our wedding photos? Can they make sure my wedding day goes smoothly?… The list goes on but before you go through all the little things, here are 4 things that Aaron and I believe are invaluable when hiring your wedding photographer.
1) Do they take the time to get to know you. Out of all of your wedding day vendors, your photographers will be there with you the most, so you will want to be sure that you not only hit it off with them but have a chance to get to know them. For Aaron and I, it’s not only through the engagement session that we get to know our couples but through grabbing a bite to eat with them, meeting over drinks, following each other on Instagram, etc. Just like friends would. We want to create a relationship with our couples. These relationships lead to the most fabulous photos.
2) Talk to your potential photographer. Let them know what you like, your wedding style and some of the important things about your wedding. If your likes and ideas line up, book them! A photographer whose style lines up with yours is super invaluable. Not only will you both get along super well, but they will be able to best capture your day for you.
3) Can you envision your wedding a little in their photos. The hardest thing for Aaron and I is when a super awesome couple meets with us and they say they would like dark and moody images with lots of nighttime photos. Yes, we can totally take some of those on a wedding day but most, if not all, of our work is light and airy. So research what you like and pick a photographer that has that look.
4) Trust. When hiring your wedding photographer, you must trust them. Part of hiring a professional photographer is knowing that they will give you their very best. From capturing the moments to artfully creating each portrait. For Aaron and I, we don’t leave a wedding with anything more to pour out. We give each couple all we have.
When these things line up, don’t be afraid, just book them! When you find a photographer that you love and who’s work you love, hire them! Certain wedding dates can be very popular in a calendar year so don’t wait to book your favorite photographer.
Cheers and happy wedding planning!

I really like the advice you give about hiring a photographer that fits your style in order to get the most our of their work. My daughter and her soon-to-be husband have been trying to find a photographer that will work with their style for a while now. They really want to try and take photos that incorporate a lot of nature into them, so that’s definitely a unique style they’ll have to search for.

Thank you Simon! Yes, it can be tough to find the right photographer but in the long run, it’s so very important. I wish them both the best and hope they have a wonderful wedding!!!
